Challenge
Across Central Asia, pastoralist families depend on livestock as their primary source of food, income, and security. Yet their way of life is increasingly at risk from increasingly common climate extremes. Smallholder livestock farmers face mounting risks from changing climate patterns such as summer droughts to harsh, extended winters which jeopardize fodder availability and drive up feed costs. These conditions often force farmers to sell essential productive assets or abandon investments in crop diversification which ultimately deepens food insecurity and undermines household resilience.
Solution
To address these vulnerabilities, Blue Marble has developed climate risk insurance products tailored to the unique needs of livestock farmers in Central Asia. At the meso level, a forecast-based insurance scheme has been introduced that uses weather data to trigger early payouts before droughts or severe frosts occur. This enables local authorities to provide fodder and support herders in advance of losses. At the household level, the solution provides direct coverage for livestock and fodder ensuring that families receive timely assistance when the weather conditions threaten their herds.
