Climate resilience for India's smallholder farmers through parametric insurance
Climate change is making farming increasingly difficult to predict. Across India, smallholder farmers are facing growing uncertainty as shifting weather patterns disrupt traditional growing seasons, threatening harvests, household incomes, and long-term financial security.
For Shivkumari, farming is her family’s livelihood. But every season now brings new challenges. When crops need rain, temperatures remain high. When sunshine is needed, heavy rainfall arrives instead. These changing conditions make it increasingly difficult to plan, invest and build resilience.
Through her Farmer Producer Organization (FPO), Shivkumari learned about parametric insurance and chose to enrol. By providing rapid financial support when predefined weather thresholds are met, parametric insurance helps farming families recover more quickly from climate shocks and continue investing in their livelihoods.
Blue Marble is working alongside Samunnati Foundation, with support from SCBF and the Howden Foundation, to expand access to digital insurance solutions that strengthen climate resilience for farming communities across India. The initiative demonstrates how partnerships can help deliver scalable financial protection that supports both immediate recovery and long-term resilience.
Stories like Shivkumari’s highlight why climate resilience extends beyond responding to disasters. It is about helping communities prepare for an increasingly uncertain future by providing practical financial protection that enables confidence, stability and continued investment in livelihoods.
Watch Shivkumari share her experience and learn more about how parametric insurance is supporting farming communities across India.
