Extreme Heat Insurance Strengthens Financial Resilience for Farming Communities in India
As extreme heat becomes more frequent and severe, it is placing increasing pressure on the livelihoods of agricultural workers. Rising temperatures can make outdoor work unsafe, reduce crop productivity, and intensify water scarcity, creating significant financial challenges for rural households.
To help address these risks, Blue Marble is partnering with Samunnati Foundation, Swiss Capacity Building Facility (SCBF), and Howden Foundation to expand access to parametric insurance for farming communities in India. The initiative is designed to provide rapid financial support when predefined extreme heat thresholds are reached, helping families manage the economic impact of climate-related disruptions.
One participant, Giriraj, described how prolonged periods of extreme heat affect nearly every aspect of his family’s wellbeing—from lost daily wages and reduced agricultural productivity to growing concerns over water availability. His experience reflects the challenges faced by many rural communities as climate risks continue to intensify.
By combining innovative insurance solutions with strong local partnerships, the initiative aims to improve financial resilience before the next extreme weather event occurs. Parametric insurance offers a data-driven approach that enables timely payouts based on predefined weather conditions, helping communities respond more quickly when climate impacts occur.
Strengthening resilience requires more than responding after disasters happen. It depends on building accessible financial protection that enables vulnerable communities to recover faster and continue investing in their futures.
