Challenge
Rural women in Central America face significant barriers in accessing health insurance, which leaves them exposed to both medical and financial risks. Preventive care and routine testing, such as screenings for reproductive health, cancer, or chronic conditions, are often prohibitively expensive. As a result, many women choose to delay or forgo care until illnesses become severe. Living in remote areas with limited health facilities further compounds these challenges, while informal employment and low financial literacy reduce access and awareness of formal insurance schemes. The result is a cycle in which treatable conditions escalate into costly emergencies, pushing families into debt while reinforcing long-term vulnerability.
Solution
To address this protection gap, Blue Marble has co-created a pioneering health insurance product with women farmers to overcome the barriers they face in accessing affordable care. Built through direct collaboration with women in rural communities, the product integrates a comprehensive package of services including access to telemedicine for routine consultations, coverage for cancer diagnostics, free diagnostic tests and essential medications, and in-person preventive care visits with doctors. By blending technology with locally delivered services, the product reduces both financial and geographic barriers to ensure that women can receive timely screenings and treatment without incurring overwhelming costs.
